Conakry: ECOWAS, through ROGEAP and with support from the World Bank, is hosting a workshop on universal access to electricity.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its Regional Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), launched a multi-stakeholder workshop on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in Conakry, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of financing the energy transition in Guinea.
Over the course of three days, institutional, technical, and financial stakeholders will receive training on tax incentives promoting solar energy, financing mechanisms to stimulate private investment, and stakeholder dialogue to improve project implementation in rural areas.

The ROGEAP-Guinea focal point, Dembaduno Albert Saa, a renewable energy engineer, noted that the initiative aims to improve the living conditions of communities not connected to the national grid. He emphasized the need to build the capacity of rural electrification stakeholders and to develop partnerships with businesses, NGOs, and national agencies.

For his part, the project team leader, Mr. Diabira, pointed out that nearly 600 million Africans lack access to electricity, including 300 million in West Africa. In Guinea, most rural areas remain without power. According to him, off-grid solutions are essential and have already proven effective elsewhere, particularly in Bangladesh and Southern Africa.

To support local businesses, ECOWAS and its partners also launched a competition on March 16 to support renewable energy initiatives, with the aim of effectively meeting the energy needs of the population.
