NATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR THE APPLICATION OF REGIONALLY HARMONIZED STANDARDS FOR DOMESTIC SOLAR SYSTEMS UP TO 350 Wp

The ECOWAS Commission, through the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), is organizing a two-day workshop in Lagos from April 23 to 24, 2025, to implement harmonized regional standards for off-grid solar photovoltaic products up to 350 WATTS.
This session of vital importance to the ECOWAS Commission was chaired by the Representative of the Federal Ministry of Energy of Nigeria, and also saw the participation of the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).
The main objective of this conclave is to ensure that the standards adopted for off-grid solar products are well known and well implemented at national level by the authorities and stakeholders concerned (experts from SON, the Federal Ministry of Electricity, the Federal Ministry of Industry, the Rural Electrification Agency, the Energy Commission, the Customs Office, the consumer organization…).

In July 2023, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers adopted two regional standards through regulation C/REG.12/07/23:
– ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-8:2020 : Renewable energy systems and hybrid systems for rural electrification – Part 9-8: Integrated systems and ;
– ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-5:2018: Recommendations for renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification – Part 9-5; ROGEAP.
Following the recommendation of the industry’s honourable ministers, ROGEAP supported 8 countries in implementing the adopted standards. During these two days, the Federal Republic of Nigeria received technical assistance from ROGEAP for the effective application of the standards relating to off-grid solar products.
After the two days of training, the experts’ skills will be reinforced to enable them to act as ambassadors to the public and lead application campaigns in the communities.
The overall aim of setting up a quality and assurance framework for off-grid solar products in the region is to clean up the market for poor-quality solar photovoltaic products and protect consumers.
This workshop follows on from the one held in Abuja on April 14 and 15, 2025, which falls within the same framework.
As a reminder, ROGEAP is a project funded by the World Bank, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS), and implemented by the ECOWAS Commission under Component 1 (Development of a regional off-grid solar energy market).
