Promoting off-grid solar photovoltaic standards: the ‘ECOWAS’, through the ‘ROGEAP’, is providing training and raising awareness amongst stakeholders in Cameroon.
(26 May 2025, Yaoundé, Republic of Cameroon).
Around thirty participants, mainly from the Ministries of Energy, Industry and Trade and other national bodies, such as standardisation agencies, rural electrification, renewable energy, the private sector and consumer associations, gathered in Yaoundé, in the Republic of Cameroon, from 26 to 27 May 2025, for training and awareness-raising on off-grid solar photovoltaic standards, as part of the ‘ROGEAP’ project.
(ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-5 and ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-8).
The main aim of this workshop was to enable the various national stakeholders to gain an in-depth understanding of the two standards relating to off-grid solar photovoltaic products with a power rating of 350Wp or less (ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-5 and ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-8), with a view to facilitating their implementation at national level.
At the end of the two-day conclave, the various participants:
- To have a good understanding of the quality standards for off-grid solar products and stand-alone photovoltaic kits);
- To familiarise oneself with the definitions, quality standards and the relevant test methods;
- In order to provide accurate information to other stakeholders regarding the two standards adopted and to raise awareness amongst the general public;
- To understand how the two standards should be applied in accordance with current legislation;
- To be able to carry out conformity assessments of off-grid photovoltaic solar products (in accordance with the relevant standards), market surveillance and;
- Disclosure of information to the general public.
In their presentations, the various representatives from the Ministries of Trade and Energy thanked the ECOWAS for helping Cameroon to implement these standards and undertook to publicise them widely at all levels.
After Yaoundé, the campaign to raise awareness of the standards will move on to Douala for the same event, from 29 to 30 June.
ROGEAPis a project jointly funded by the World Bank, the Clean Technology Fund and the Government of the Netherlands, covering 19 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is being implemented by the Commission of the Autonomous Community ofECOWAS, through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation.
