Bissau: The OROGEAP disseminates information, raises awareness and provides training to key stakeholders on regional standards relating to off-grid solar systems with a capacity of 350 Wp or less (ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9- 8:2020 and ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-5:2018).

Bangui, (9 September 2025).

Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, hosted a national workshop organised by the African Solar Energy Association (ROGEAP) on the implementation of regional standards for off-grid solar photovoltaic systems.

This workshop, to be held from 29 to 30 October 2025, is the logical continuation of a series of workshops in the 19 countries covered by the ‘ROGEAP’ initiative.

The opening of the proceedings was attended by officials from Guinea-Bissau and the ‘ECOWAS’, represented by the Principal Adviser to the ‘ROGEAP’, on behalf of the Commission President.

Mr El Hadji Sylla reiterated, on the same occasion, the project’s commitment to supporting countries in the effective adoption of these standards approved by the Council of Ministers of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (ECOWAS).

This two-day workshop, which brought together more than thirty experts from the public and private sectors, officials from the Ministries of Finance and Trade, civil society and SMEs, amongst others, is a logical follow-up to the workshops recently held in other countries.

By the end of this awareness-raising and training workshop, participants should have a good understanding of the quality standards for off-grid solar products (ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-5 and ECOSTAND IEC TS 62257-9-8);

They should also familiarise themselves with the definitions, international quality standards and testing methods for off-grid solar products and systems;

Finally, they will be able to provide accurate information to other stakeholders on the two standards adopted and raise awareness amongst the general public;

It should be noted that the ECOWAS Commission, through the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), is helping the 19 countries involved in the project to increase the rate of access to electricity for households, businesses and public institutions through modern off-grid solar systems, using a harmonised regional approach.

ROGEAPis a project funded by the World Bank, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS), and implemented by the Commission of the ECOWAS through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation and the BOAD.
