General Birame DIOP Assumes Office as Head of the ECOWAS Commission

On August 31, 2026, General Birame DIOP of Senegal officially assumed the office of Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission, succeeding Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY of The Gambia, whose four-year term had come to an end.

This transition comes a few weeks after the election of H.E. Bassirou Diomaye FAYE, President of the Republic of Senegal, as the current Chair of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government for a one-year term, during the 69th Summit held in Freetown on July 19, 2026.

As part of its efforts to promote regional integration, the Regional Project on Access to Electricity and Energy Storage Systems (ROGEAP) contributes to the development of energy infrastructure, the improvement of access to electricity, and the strengthening of cooperation among ECOWAS member states.

The ROGEAP team extends its warmest congratulations to General Birame DIOP on his appointment and wishes him every success in fulfilling his mandate as head of the ECOWAS Commission, in the service of regional development and integration.
